For a step back into the Wild West, there’s no place like Deadwood. Nearly $300 million has been dedicated to restoring this once infamous gold-mining boomtown, which has earned recognition as a National Historic Landmark. Small gaming halls, good restaurants, and hotels occupy virtually every storefront on Main Street, just as they did back in the city’s late-19th-century heyday.

After exploring Deadwood,  Mount Rushmore is only an hour away.

The Crazy Horse Memorial is an hour from Deadwood

The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain monument complex that is under construction on privately held land in the Black Hills, in Custer County, South Dakota. It represents Crazy Horse, an Oglala Lakota warrior, riding a horse and pointing into the distance. The memorial was commissioned by Lakota elder Henry Standing Bear to be sculpted by Korczak Ziółkowski. It is operated by the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, a private non-profit.

The memorial consists of the mountain carving (monument), the Indian Museum of North America, and the Native American Cultural Center. The monument is being carved out of Thunderhead Mountain on land considered sacred by some Oglala Lakota, between Custer and Hill City, roughly 17 miles from Mount Rushmore. The sculpture's final dimensions are planned to be 641 feet (195 m) wide and 563 feet (172 m) high. The head of Crazy Horse will be 87 feet (27 m) high; by comparison, the heads of the four U.S. Presidents at Mount Rushmore are each 60 feet (18 m) high. The monument has been in progress since 1948 and is still far from completion. If completed, it may become the world's largest sculpture....   Read More

Silverado Franklin Hotel & Gaming Complex

At the Franklin “There are several small historical details, like the tin ceiling next to the restaurant, that have been covered over by previous renovations. We want to uncover some of these things as we work to restore the hotel over the coming months,” Rensch said. “Those details seem small, but they give the Franklin the kind of Victorian charm and character for which Deadwood is known.”More than 360 different slot games, several variations of blackjack and poker, including Texas Hold 'Em, Caribbean Stud and 3-Card Poker; a poker room and more can be enjoyed.

History of Deadwood  After the Custer Expedition of 1874 discovered gold in the forbidden Lakota lands of the Black Hills, thousands of prospectors from across the nation poured into the region. In late 1875, the Frank Bryant party began exploring the mountain streams and cascading creeks of the northern Black Hills for the precious yellow metal. It wasn't long before they found it, and within a few months nearly 10,000 miners, muleskinners, madams, gamblers and gunslingers had made their way into narrow Deadwood Gulch.  Read More...
